Movie Review: Taylor Swift - Miss Americana
It is common knowledge that over the past few years Taylor Swift’s image and music changed. This documentary tells the story of what led her to this change.
You see all these people gossiping about celebrities, spreading rumours – horrible rumours-, saying awful thing about a girl who just wanted to follow her dreams. You hear these rumours, you see people enjoying someone else’s pain. And you realize how horrible the human beings can be. Just for a split-second. But then you have to move on with your life. You don’t know this celebrity – her existence almost seems like a fantasy. Like she is just part of an aspiring writer’s elaborate plot for their next novel.
You don’t think about the horrendous feelings this person is going through. We get anxiety attacks if we think someone is saying something of us behind our backs. But a pop star we look up to, is called annoying, people are screaming about how they hate her. Yet we can’t spare two seconds to contradict these people. We go with the flow. We follow the trend. Of course there is her true fans who would stand up for her, but that is a rarity in itself.
This documentary exposes those feelings Taylor had to go through. It touches you, it changes your perception. Raw and true emotions are pulled out of you. This documentary strums the strings of your heart.
She then approaches the topic of equality. Being able to state her opinion just because she can. And that is just revolutionary. Women are told to be good girls, to say please and thank you. We may not be loud. We may not be angry because that is not proper in the conventional sense. She exposes everything which every woman on this planet thinks and struggles with. But we are not allowed to say anything about it! Because then we are described as overly emotional and that we are PMSing.
This documentary has personally been so relatable to me. Now more than ever, I feel close to her. She may be this glamorous celebrity, but she struggles with the things we do too. Eating disorders, insecurities, equality. Words hurt her just like words hurt us. She is one of us. Only Taylor Swift can do this to my heart. She makes us feel stuff we cannot explain. And she just made my heart feel something amazing.
Everyone should watch this: to have a glance at the not-so-glamorous life of celebrities, to see that words actually hurt. Watch it then at least to try and understand what women go through on a daily basis. To see that there is actually a double standard. Yes, this is not something we have been inventing out of thin air.
